i’ve been waiting for this.
Supercut of the Day: It’s Heath Ledger as The Joker in The Dark Knight, on-camera dialogue only, for more than 10 straight minutes.
what i’ve been up to
I am an art teacher at a preschool in Manhattan. Each year we have an art show, wherein we show the paintings and projects our 70-or-so students have been working on to their adoring parents. There are cookies involved.
For the last couple months, I’ve been making a tiny city with my kids! We’ve been talking about things like buildings and what colors they are, what kinds of things are found in the park, and how many wheels are on a subway car. We used recycled boxes, paint, pipe cleaners, card stock, clothes pins, tissue paper, shiny sticker paper, glue and glitter. Today I put together the pieces we’ve been working on and had a lot of fun pretending to be Michel Gondry.
In one of Jörn Vanhöfen’s large-scale photographs, a peaceful marina full of small boats is dwarfed by a passing cruise ship, its lights glowing in the morning (or evening) light. In another, a seemingly abandoned house appears to be sinking into the surrounding desert landscape. Both of these images are part of Vanhöfen’s series entitled “Aftermath,” and while they raise questions about what came before, so do they make me consider what’s to come. Thankfully, these weighty inquiries are at times lightened by Vanhöfen’s sense of humor. A selection from “Aftermath” will be on exhibit at New York’s Robert Mann Gallery as of this Thursday, March 15th.

I went to the #MillionHoodieMarch last night and tried to notice how people felt and what kinds of things they said. Here’re some of the thoughts I heard:
“There are people richer than presidents”
“It’s about community.”
“Columbus did not discover America, he encountered it.”
“I look suspicious because I’m Black, because I’m Latino. They will kill me because I’m Black, because I’m Latino.”
“Do not kill my son too. Do not kill my people. Do not kill my cousin. Do not kill my brother.”
When a crew of White anarchists were chanting some variation on “Fuck The Police”, a Black gentlemen asked them to “keep it PG” out of respect for the families present. As the group rallied with indignance , this man just said “you can talk circles around me but this is not your party.”
and I felt like, Hell Yeah.
